Discover the Ehrbach Gorge on the Moselle
Discover the Ehrbach Gorge on the Moselle: Hike past waterfalls, rocks and forests in the Hunsrück – a nature experience and highlight for hiking enthusiasts.

The picturesque Ehrbach Valley, a true natural gem, stretches for 17 km from Emmelshausen or Buchholz to Brodenbach, set in idyllic surroundings close to your holiday home on the Moselle.
Marked with an ‘E’, the hiking trail winds its way through this unique landscape, passing babbling waterfalls, mysterious potholes, characteristic Hunsrück slate and offering adventurous sections with short climbs and stream crossings. These natural obstacles are mastered with sturdy wooden bridges and carefully constructed steps.
The Ehrbach Gorge, a highlight of this route, is celebrated by nature lovers as one of Germany’s most beautiful landscapes. Along the rocky section of the gorge you can discover four historic mills, including the Daubisberg Mill, which still impresses today with its working waterwheel.
This hike offers not only spectacular scenery but also deep insights into the region’s cultural heritage. A trip here, ideally starting from a holiday home on the Moselle, is the perfect mix of relaxation in nature and exploring local sights. Pack your hiking boots and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in the heart of the Hunsrück that showcases the Moselle region in all its facets.
The path through the gorge itself is carved partly into the rock and leads past boulders and steep slopes. At the end of the hike you can enjoy a view of Ehrenburg Castle from the terrace of the Vogelsang Mill before you reach the Moselle promenade in Brodenbach.
The route begins on a farm track through blooming meadows and horse pastures before heading downhill towards Eckmühle. You see the Ehrbach stream and green meadows before you enter the gorge. Here the trail becomes wilder, with short scrambling sections and steel cables for safety.
The rock formations and the surrounding nature are breathtakingly beautiful, with many chances to capture the views with your camera. The stream winds its way through the rock, there are waterfalls and runnels and a wild, romantic deciduous forest.
At sunrise and sunset, the light is especially warm and atmospheric. Several benches and seating areas invite you to pause and take in the scenery. If the 8.5 kilometres are not enough, you can add the Schöneck loop and extend the hike to around 15 kilometres in total.
The Ehrbach Gorge is an unforgettable experience and an absolute highlight for hikers and nature lovers. The hiking car park in Oppenhausen has space for around 100 cars, a seating area and a large information board with a map of the route. The trail is well marked and signposted throughout. Along the way you encounter many animals and plants and have plenty of opportunities to observe nature.
A special highlight of the hike is the Stierwiese meadow, from where you can already see the picturesque Eckmühle. This spot is ideal for a short break to enjoy the impressive view in peace. To catch the best light and avoid crowds, it is a good idea to start the tour early in the morning or later in the evening. The route is especially suitable for those who value a combination of natural beauty and physical activity.
Make sure you bring enough water and do not forget your camera equipment to capture lasting impressions of the landscape. This tour promises not only restorative moments in nature but also the chance to experience the local flora and fauna up close.
