Discover Mosel Wines: Top Wineries and Tasting Tips

The Mosel is one of Germany's oldest and most renowned wine regions and is famous for its high-quality Riesling wines. The region stretches along the Mosel River from the French border to Koblenz and offers a wide range of terroir-driven differences that are clearly reflected in the wines.

This article presents some of the best wineries as well as new and noteworthy Mosel wines from the Palatinate and other regions, and gives practical tips for tasting.

One of the best-known estates on the Mosel is Weingut Dr. Loosen. The winery focuses on high-quality Riesling and is especially known for its single-vineyard bottlings. Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling is a particularly recommended wine, appreciated for its finesse and mineral notes.

Another outstanding Mosel estate is Weingut Egon Müller. It is one of the leading producers in the region and is famous for its premium Riesling from the Scharzhofberger vineyard. Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a remarkable wine, known for its complexity and longevity.

Another excellent winery is Weingut von Winning from Deidesheim. It is one of the oldest estates in the region and specializes in high-quality Riesling. Von Winning Estate Riesling Trocken is a standout wine, valued for its elegant acidity and aromas of green apple.

Alongside these established estates, there are also a number of younger, up-and-coming producers worth discovering. One of these is Weingut van Volxem. It focuses on high-quality Riesling and has received several awards in recent years. Van Volxem Saar Riesling is a particularly recommended wine, known for its finesse and citrus aromas.

Another rising estate is Weingut Weegmüller from Neustadt an der Weinstraße. It specializes in Riesling and Pinot Noir and has also received several awards in recent years. Weegmüller Riesling Trocken is highly recommended and known for its fine acidity and aromas of peach and citrus fruits.

When tasting wines from the Mosel, the right setting and the right glass are crucial. A cool room temperature of about 50–55 degrees Fahrenheit and a clean, dry glass are ideal. When opening the wine, pay close attention to color, aroma and taste. A good Riesling shows a pale to medium golden color, a complex nose with green apple, citrus and mineral notes, and a well-balanced palate with fine acidity.

It is important to decant the wine properly, especially if it is more than 10 years old. Decanting helps the aromas and flavors to unfold and removes yeast deposits from the bottom of the bottle.

Food pairing is another key element when tasting Mosel wines. Riesling goes particularly well with fish, Asian dishes and ham. Pinot Noir pairs well with meat dishes, cheese and other specialties.

Overall, the Mosel offers a wide variety of outstanding wineries and wines to discover. From traditional, renowned estates to dynamic, innovative producers, the region has something to offer every palate.

With the right knowledge and techniques, tasting wines from the Mosel can become an unforgettable experience.
